Steamboat residents receive degrees from CU

— The following Steamboat Springs residents received their bachelor's degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder during Dec. 22 winter commencement ceremonies: Daniel Martin, Daniel Adams, Jeff Aragon, Genevieve Bassett, Tyler Hartung, Katherine Homier and Annie Robbins.

Registration for Colorado Mountain College's English as a Second Language/InglÃs como Segundo Idioma program is at 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9:30 a.m. to noon Wednesdays through January. To register, meet in Willett Hall, Room 303. All languages and levels are welcome. Classes are free.

Steamboat Optimist Club seeks Teen of Month

The Steamboat Optimist Club is accepting applications from area high school seniors for its Teen of the Month award. All teens recognized as a Teen of the Month will be eligible for a $1,000 Teen of The Year award to be presented at the Teen of The Year dinner in May. Applications are available at all counselors' offices in Steamboat Springs, Hayden and Oak Creek, or call club president Sid Hopkins at 870-8172 or Rob McCarthy at 871-7179 for more information.

Students "Sending Smiles" to soldiers

Steamboat Springs Middle and High School students are putting together care packages to send to U.S. military troops stationed overseas. Dubbed "Operation Sending Smiles," the students are seeking donations of money, prepackaged snacks, hot chocolate, coffee, beef jerky, trail mix, nuts, socks, long-sleeve shirts, blankets, movies (DVDs), music (CDs), magazines and prepaid calling cards (so troops can call home).
