Spinning through the seasons

Staying fit

Winter does not signal the end to cycling in Steamboat Springs. At Old Town Hot Springs, formerly the Steamboat Springs Health and Recreation Center, instructors allow a limited number of cyclists to keep their legs in shape through a series of spinning classes.

"What people like about it is it's a hard workout," Old Town Hot Springs trainer Judy Wade said.

Spinning is offered at 6:15 p.m. Monday through Friday and again at 12:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

"It's an hour class," Wade said. "Probably 10 minutes is warming up and stretching and then three to five minutes at the end is cool down. It's supposed to be for all levels. We try to give even the best athlete a workout."

Spinners are encouraged to go at an appropriate pace. There are only 15 stationary bicycles in the Old Town Hot Springs room.

"Some people really try to simulate a ride outside," Wade said. "Some instructors (teach spinning) to the beat of music."

Spinning is only offered during the winter, so its popularity forces people to register early.

The cost is $3 per session for Old Town Hot Springs members. People can purchase a punch card with 10 punches for $20 for a better deal. The cost for non-members is $7. All spinners should bring water and wear appropriate shoes. Biking shoes are allowed, and padded shorts are recommended.

The morning spinning classes tend to be the busiest, so people should call the day before to sign up. Spinners must register for all classes. To register, call 879-1828, ext. 0.

Spinning also is offered year-round at Will Power and Grace, and additional classes are offered during winter.

Spinning classes are $7 per session with a punch card and $10 per session without a punch card. Calling ahead to sign up is recommended. The phone number is 870-1444.

Spinning classes are offered six days a week at various times. Sessions are one hour except for the two-hour sessions from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

Classes are at 8:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 11 a.m. Fridays and at 9 a.m. Saturdays.
