It's no secret that Steamboat Springs is Ski Town USA. The dozens of Winter Olympians who have called Steamboat home over the decades indeed justify the moniker. But Routt County is home to many outstanding young men and women who make names for themselves in areas other than - or in addition to - winter sports. Unfortunately, many of them often go unrecognized.

We hope Rising Stars changes that. Veteran Steamboat photographer John F. Russell and talented writer Mike Lawrence recently spent time with six of the county's most outstanding teenagers. Of course, there are many accomplished teens who you won't find between the covers of our third edition of At Home, but we think these six are worthy representatives of the deep local talent pool.

Russell and Lawrence also teamed up to shine a little light on one of Routt County's oldest and most forgotten industries - mining. The duo spent a day above and underground at Twentymile Coal Co. outside of Hayden. Many readers may know of our coal industry only by the trains that rumble through downtown Steamboat Springs as often as three times a day. This in-depth look at one of the country's more productive coal mines and the people who spend half their days under the surface of the earth certainly will change that.

This edition of At Home also features some lighter fare.

Longtime Steamboat resident and reporter Tom Ross spent a weekend at the highly acclaimed Denver Art Museum, where modern art and architecture come together in what Ross describes as a mind-opening experience in the heart of our state capital. If you're looking for an excuse to skip town for a long weekend or just a one-day jaunt, Ross gives you the scoop on the Mile High City's newest - and perhaps best - attraction.

Of course, many 'Boaters look farther than the Front Range when winter turns to spring.

Magazine designer and co-editor Allison Miriani and writer Allison Plean organized a fashion shoot at Yampa Valley Regional Airport to make sure you know exactly what should be in your suitcase - or on your body - the next time you head to Las Vegas, Europe or Mexico.

For those who would rather party a little closer to home, Miriani explores the ins and outs of entertaining guests at your home, including catered and theme parties. Don't miss this piece if you plan to throw a bash of your own any time soon.

I've mentioned only a few of the many features we think you'll enjoy in the following pages, including a conversation with national sportscaster and part-time Steamboat resident Verne Lundquist.

So grab a blanket, curl up in your favorite cozy space, and enjoy another day At Home in Steamboat Springs.
