Shame on Pilot and Today

"Shame on Congress if another year goes by without such reforms" (Pilot & Today "Our View" published on Dec. 31) Shame on this paper for assisting in the invasion of Iraq. The same is happening here again. The biggest issue in this country is Iraq! You helped get us there now help get us out.

More important matters

I do not believe that immigration reform is the most important item to deal with now. The Iraq civil war exit (unlike Tucker Carlson, we do owe the people of Iraq plenty), federal deficit-fiscal responsibility, uninsured Americans, education, environmental reform with massive epa mileage standards revisions, campaign finance-ethics reform, attempting to fix medicare and social security come to mind way before immigration reform and a puppet 700 mile long wall.

Stay away, big box

I love the Steamboat area! My family and I vacation in Steamboat at least once or twice a year. We live in Douglas County and look forward to the uniqueness and small-town feel that Steamboat offers. I am happy to hear that the Steamboat community is working to keep it from being over run by "big box" stores. Keep Steamboat, Steamboat.

Saluting Jim Cook

Great article Mike Lawrence! Jim Cook's got vision, guts and a tenacious style that doesn't waver from the goals he sets out to accomplish. He's got heart and soul, and those of us who call Steamboat home will benefit for years to come from his ideas - he's a hard worker and wants to leave a legacy. Thanks for bringing out the best in him.

Criticizing Cook

I could not disagree more with Mike Lawrence's story which heaps praise upon Mr. Cook and summerlee's comment. Since Mr. Cook's recent arrival in this community, he has brought in out-of-town "money changers" to build, build, build with no regard for the character and history of this community. His buildings are architecturally out of character with the other main street buildings. What possible legacy will they leave?

Wall needs luck

Everyone can use a little luck; Gary Wall will need it. The fact is too many at the sheriff's office are already on the way out for fear of working for a lawless sheriff. Let's hope that the new sheriff can manage a positive and effective office.

Wall's undersheriff

Silence still on who will act as undersheriff in the merryman troupe of Wall. He claims "that I've considered a lot of people," he said. "I thought it was important not to dilute what I was doing during my campaign. I found no reason to rush into that decision." Questions from the auditorium participants would deem this lack of naming a supporting actor in the play as less than honest and forthright. One with any sense of judicial prose would exclaim that the appointment of an undersheriff is crucial.

Hail the free market

Now this is how common people get rich ("Prices in Silver Spur Soaring," published on Page 3B of the Dec. 31 Pilot & Today). Certainly not by so-called affordable housing, where buyers are left holding the bag for a failed, well-intending socialistic idea. The free market system works.
