Steamboat Springs ski racer Ian Landy makes his way down the Bashor slalom course during a high school ski meet at the Steamboat Ski Area on Thursday.
Steamboat Springs The boys on Steamboat Springs' Alpine ski team brought their best skiing early to Thursday's high school slalom event at the Steamboat Ski Area.
Unfortunately, most of the Sailors were a little slow through the gates on their second runs.
Ramsey Bernard tore up the dual slalom course in the Bashor Bowl area on his first run, tying for the fastest first-run time on his course and the third-fastest overall time with 34.63 seconds.
But Bernard could not duplicate the effort on his second run. He slid out and had to hike up the trail to catch the gate and complete the run.
"(The course) was easy at first, but you would get going fast and the gates would start to stack up," Bernard said. "I was trying to let my skis keep going. Stuff like that happens when you're going aggressively in ski racing."
Steamboat's Ian Landy suffered a similar fate. Positioned in sixth place overall after the first run, he also slid out on his second run, stepping on his pole and snapping it in half.
"I really loaded up my skis when I was making it to the turny section and shot out," Landy said.
Jimmy Hostetler, Wiley Thayer, Kris Allen and Jordy Bernard also were in the top 30 after their first runs. But only Hostetler improved his time on the second run. He finished with a combined time of 1 minute, 12.55 seconds. The time was good enough for 10th overall. Allen finished 12th, and Thayer was 14th.
Allen said the snow that fell between his two runs didn't affect his skiing as much as the course becoming rutted out and icy after the hundreds of starts it saw throughout the day.
As a team, the Sailors finished fourth. Summit won the boys event, Aspen took second and Middle Park took third.
Aspen's Wiley Maple won the race with a combined time of 1:08.02.
The Alpine ski team's next race is a giant slalom event Jan. 12 in Aspen.
