Steamboat Springs Good morning. I'm Alexis DeLaCruz and these are your headlines for Tuesday February 27, 2007.
Topping the news, the Steamboat Ski Area has enjoyed more than three feet of snow in three days and more could be on the way. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Northwest Colorado as a Pacific storm is expected to move into the area and drop another foot of snow in the mountain areas. The watch is for this afternoon through Wednesday night. The high today should be 34 with an overnight low of 14.
Les Otten, the founder of American Skiing Co., has resigned from the company's board of directors. Otten was the CEO of the company until 2001 when he resigned as ASC faced crippling debt that caused its stock price to plummet. There is speculation that Otten resigned from the board so that he could make a bid to buy the Sugarloaf and Sunday River ski resorts in Maine from American Skiing. ASC is expected to close on its deal to sell the Steamboat Ski Area to Intrawest in March.
Longtime Steamboat Motors general manager John Centner is leaving the dealership. Centner announced Monday that he is joining Randall Reed's World Class Automotive Group as president of its Colorado operations. Specifically, Centner will oversee "Planet Powersports" with stores in Steamboat and Craig. The stores sell motor sports vehicles such as motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. The Steamboat store is in the old True Value site in Riverside Center. It should be ready for a grand opening in May.
The Steamboat Springs School Board voted Monday not to fill the director of curriculum and instruction position on an interim basis. Kelly Stanford resigned the position Feb. 23 to work for TIC. Middle School Assistant Principal Jerry Buelter had stepped forward to take on the role, but the board felt moving him on an interim basis was not a smart use of district personnel.
The Steamboat Springs City Council has an ambitious agenda tonight. The council is expected to discuss and set priorities and goals for the coming year. Much of the discussion will focus on affordable housing policies and managing the significant growth facing the city. The meeting starts with a closed session at 4:30 p.m. followed by the regular session at 5 p.m. The meeting is in Centennial Hall.
