Stephen Dearholt: Council hypocrisy

The ethical lapse of accepting a ski pass is minor compared to the hypocrisy shown by the entire City Council concerning the lack of parking at the newly approved library expansion. Is it ethical for the City Council to approve new construction for the library with 21 too few parking spaces?

It has been the policy of the city for years to require a certain number of parking spots for a set amount of new square footage constructed. Can you imagine a private developer coming to the City Council and trying to get approval of a project with 21 too few parking spaces? No private individual would have the audacity to even consider it.

Parking is one of the most critical issues facing the city of Steamboat Springs. Why did the City Council approve the library expansion as submitted?

And what about a fee in lieu for the increased impact on housing of building construction, perpetual maintenance and staff? Leadership is best accomplished through example ... tell you anything about our current city council?

You are absolutely correct! Parking is a critical issue and the Planning Commision and Council seem to have that "Do as I say, not do as I do" attitude. Before the City breaks gound on the new Community Center they should consider building a kitchen next to one of the Library's meeting rooms and call it a Community Center. Then the Stockbridge Transit Center could be used as intended. For parking!
