Winter Carnival starts today
Wednesday, February 7, 2007
Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival has a special place in the storied history of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.
For the 94th year, the Winter Sports Club will transform Steamboat into a winter wonderland complete with street events, evening parties and athletic competitions on Howelsen Hill. The carnival begins today and runs through Sunday.
The opening ceremony is at 5:30 p.m. today at Olympian Hall in the Howelsen Hill Lodge off Fifth Street.
The ceremony will honor the Winter Carnival queen, Jenny Allen, and her court of attendants, Cassady Roberts and Missy Krause. Also featured will be the Little Princesses - Isabelle Boniface, Margaret Dickson, Peyton Enger, Marjorie Hellyer, Maya Kissane, Rachelle Koly, Delaney Moon, Isabel Rillos, Kari Saunders, Lily Starkey, Amber Townsend and Lucy Wilson.
This year's Grand Marshal is Billy Kidd, the Steamboat Ski Area's director of skiing and a former Olympian and world champion ski racer.
The Winter Carnival serves as a fundraiser for the Winter Sports Club, which includes nearly 1,100 youths competing in 50 winter sports programs.
This year's theme is "The Spirit of Steamboat," and Steam-
boat Springs High School senior Morgan Dingle designed the winning button.
Buttons cost $7 and permit admission to all Winter Carnival events. They are sold at various locations throughout Steamboat, including the Winter Sports Club's main office at Howelsen Hill Lodge and the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association.
