Steamboat Springs The South Routt School Board has a vacancy. Again.
Gary Miller has resigned for health reasons, board president Tim Corrigan said. Miller's resignation was effective immediately, and the board is seeking an immediate replacement for its District 5 seat.
District 5 is bordered by Eagle County to the south, Grand County to the east, Rio Blanco and Garfield counties to the west and the town of Yampa to the north.
"There are not a whole lot of people in that area," Corrigan said. "But I think it may be one of the districts that may grow in size when we rebalance for population changes."
The School Board has expressed interest in redistricting because of population shifts.
Corrigan said the board discussed waiting to fill the District 5 vacancy until a decision on redistricting was finalized and boundaries were redrawn. Board members decided to to fill the vacancy as soon as possible.
The School Board has seven members but no at-large positions.
Whoever is appointed will serve the remainder of Miller's term, which expires in November. At that time, an open election for the District 5 seat will be held.
South Routt Superintendent Kelly Reed said the board has 60 days to find a new board member or he will have to appoint someone from District 5.
People interested in filling the District 5 seat should address a letter of interest to either Corrigan or Reed at P.O. Box 158, Oak Creek, CO 80467.
The board plans to address the District 5 vacancy at its Feb. 15 meeting.
