Applications being accepted for LEAP

— The Routt County Department of Human Services is accepting applications for its Low Income Energy Assistance Program, or LEAP, through April 30, 2008. LEAP is a federally funded program designed to help low-income households meet their winter home heating costs; it does not pay the entire cost of home heating.

Household income may not exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. The maximum monthly income for a one-person household is $1,574.

Applications can be picked up at the Human Services office, 135 Sixth Str. in downtown Steamboat Springs. For information, call Ruth Ann at 879-1540, or 1-866-432-8435.

Breast cancer benefit under way

Pink scarves made by the "Pink Scarf Brigade" are on sale at Epilogue Book Co. All proceeds from sales of the volunteer-made scarves go to local women suffering from breast cancer and the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Program. Sales will continue through the holidays. Thanks to all for your support. To donate or volunteer, call Jo at 846-2627.

Horizons seeks volunteers for winter sports program

Horizons needs volunteers for its ski and winter sports program. This is the 31st year Horizons, Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. and volunteers from the community have partnered to provide the winter sports program for individuals with developmental disabilities.

This is a great opportunity to get involved, meet some wonderful people and spend seven Saturday afternoons this winter helping Horizons clients enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. Call 879-2065, ext. 110 to volunteer or to get more information.

Food assistance available through LIFT-UP

USDA commodities are being distributed for the fourth quarter of 2007 at LIFT-UP of Routt County offices in Steamboat Springs, Hayden and Oak Creek, through the Emergency Food Assistance Program. Eligible households may receive Assistance Program foods once per quarter.

This quarterly distribution ends Dec. 31. Food will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Call 870-8804 between 1 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to ask about income-eligibility and hours of operation for each office.
