Bill and Cathie Voorhees: Recall Sheriff Wall

— Your article on Sheriff Wall's license suspension points out a serious problem we, the citizens of Routt County, need to take action to correct. As summarized below, Sheriff Wall's actions since he was elected have clearly shown he is not the correct person for the position of Routt County Sheriff. It is now time for the citizens to begin a recall process and appoint a qualified person for sheriff who has integrity : We pay taxes which are used to pay his salary, and we are not getting value for our money. He has shown that he considers himself and his department above the restrictions of the law and of county policies. We can not receive the law enforcement we are paying for when Sheriff Wall himself has such disregard of both the laws and the county regulations as he has demonstrated.

Let us review the facts:

1. When he was sworn in, he demanded special treatment by a separate ceremony. It clearly shows that he considers himself too good to be sworn in with the other county officials. With this attitude, how can he work effectively with these same people in the performance of county business?

2. The use of county vehicles by department employees for personal business is clearly a violation of county policy. His feud with the County Commissioners concerning this matter again shows his disregard for regulations. Doesn't a sheriff need to follow the regulations as we all are expected to do? Should our tax dollars support private use of county vehicles?

3. The "ELDERWATCH" program was dropped. This was a special program that used to give the seniors in our county comfort that they had an officer, whom they could trust, to help them with fraud, scam phone calls and other concerns. Our Sheriff has shown his lack of concern for the elderly members of the county by this action. Do we really want to ignore this segment of our population?

4. Early on, Sheriff Wall decided to cut funding and drop out of GRAMNET, giving us the clear message that he really doesn't care about drug activities in our area. This is scary! One of his duties as sheriff is to uphold the law and to arrest those who violate the law. Are we safer now?

5. The most recent event we are aware of is the loss of Sheriff Wall's driver's license related to DUI charges, including the embarrassment of statewide news coverage. This court action certainly supports the State Patrol's charges of driving under the influence. Can we citizens feel safer on the road when the sheriff displays disregard for the same law he has sworn to uphold?

I think now is the time for the citizens to start a recall action. This is probably only the tip of the iceberg of the sheriff's inappropriate actions. Can we afford to have this continue another three years?

Gramnet!!! dumping that waste of $ was the only good thing this Sherriff took care of.

Otherwise, the letter was pretty much right on.

While I agree it's time to oust Wall, perhaps we should wait until after January 16 to see what kind of plea bargain he's offered, or the outcome of the court case should he elect not to accept a plea--just to add more fuel to the fire. You have to remember Wall has not once accepted responsibility for any of these KNOWN actions (his ego has taken over any amount of common sense he may have had); instead, he has squeeled like a little pig and pointed fingers at everyone else but himself.

Where's the recall petition? I'll sign it! Recall worked in this county back in the mid 1980's with Billy Mac! Doe's anyone remember that recall? Let the people judge Wall for his actions. Let's do it now!

Oscar 9 years, 3 months ago

Clearly this man does not have the character, integrity or judgement to be our Sheriff or to have the common sense or dignity to resign, so a recall is probably our only option. The sooner the better. What's the point of waiting to see what kind of other legal shenanigans he can pull with a plea bargain? He has clearly proven himself as unworthy of the job and of public trust.

Other than, possibly, being guilty of a DUI charge, none of Wall's actions are out of line with responsible administration of the sheriff's department.

In the last couple of days, there have been several vehicle accidents (requiring RCSO assistance) on RCR-129 near the 20 mile marker. In the past, there was no hope of assistance from town in less than 30 minutes. Now, with a RCSO officer living in North Routt, and driving the county-owned patrol vehicle, there is at least some chance of faster assistance after regular working hours. It is not at all uncommon to see LE vehicles parked in front of private residences all over the country, especially in rural areas, precisely for the reasons that Sheriff Wall stated.

GRAMNET was always a joke. Drug arrest statistics have not changed. If you want to blame someone for the community's liberal attitude on drugs, then blame Judge Garrecht (who ordered DEA officers to return contraband marijuana) and his cronies who tolerate substance abuse, go easy on MIPs and allow kids to feel like the whole system is one big joke.

Elderwatch was not an appropriate use of RCSO resources. This is a heart-string issue that has been blown out of proportion, and by the way, why have we not heard reports of elders who have suffered as a result? Because there have not BEEN any!

I suppose a lot of people don't know what it's like to have your life threatened, or your business robbed, or know about scams affecting hundreds of people and not be able to get the RCSO to take any effective action. How would all of you like it to have a former military sniper threaten your life, by leaving the threat on a telephone answering machine (yeah, he was drunk!), and the RCSO not be capable of getting the paperwork down to the courthouse so that the jerk could be indicted? Makes you feel really great working at a remote jobsite in North Routt to wonder if you're going to be shot every time you turn your back to the woods, ya know?

The RCSO needed big changes, and it needed them in a hurry. Mr. Wall has made many enemies since he took office, and removing him is only going to let it go back to the way it was. The average citizen did not see or know about the abuses of rights, and the negligence of the RCSO, which impacted honest, law-abiding citizens.

Mr. Wall may be guilty of the DUI, but we'll have to wait and see about that one. Even so, if he is, I'd rather have him in office than either one of his former opponents. We don't need a law enforcement agency that does nothing but put on a show, while allowing the real criminals to operate at will. That's what we had before, and that's why people voted for a change.

nxoby is right on. Get the tar and I'll bring the feathers. There are enough chickens in town to pluck. This blog is filled with them when they criticize and are afraid to sign their names.

Mtn. Warlock is ready to sign but don't count on him to carry one I guess. Yeh, get out there and do the work and stand on the street corners and sit in parking lots for drive-by signers, and sit outside city market and the liquor store. Too bad there are no free winter concerts to get people under the influence to sign. Ironic, huh?

Put up or shut up. Get it started Vorhees or put down the pen and go back to whatever it was you were doing before you blew off steam in this rag. What excuse will any of you have now if you don't? Oh I know, too much work and it's winter and noone wants to sit outside with their petitions or slog over the heaps of snow on main street. You couldn't recall D in sunny summer weather (okay that's a set up for your excuses why it didn't work) but you'll recall Wall in the winter.

Just like the Germans in Russia you'll be defeated by Generals Mud and Winter! But what do I know, I'm the dimwitiguess.

id, I admire you! You are right on here. Who is the better candidate and watch what you wish for. SOme of the candidates over the years have had to be descendents of the Gestapo. Look at the city cops, no forget I said that. Look at the state police...damn I keep sticking my foot in my mouth.

Brown boots and a goose step would straighten this town out. (That sentence is NOT intended to bring fear to any ethnic groups living here. I use it to point out the some other sheriff choices we've had over the years) And an added bonus is they could haul off the school board and the city council. There are train tracks that run by here. That's what you want? Feel duped into voting for Wall, maybe you should review who else was running. Don't like the choices - then you run next time!

Warlock, a recall does give folks the chance to choose again. If you are serious about it, who would your candidate be? Without a compelling, electable, alternative, you will likely not get a recall on the ballot.

If a recall petion does succeed, and an election is held, you may be suprised when it comes to your view about who has more or less "liberal approaches to issues than most". The political wind based on recent elections seems to me to be social liberal, fiscal conservative.

People in this community really do want a different approach to law enforcement. A "return to status quo" candidate would be a tough sell. The bottom line is that I do not think that many people are really upset with Wall the way a vocal minority that comments on this forum is. People who are not upset do not sign recall petions.

A recall on Wall would be as effective and community building as the Dr. D recall. Find a better outlet for your hate. A lot of local orgs. need volunteers right now, and the skiings' OK. Merry Christmas!

I generally do not agree with dimwit or id04 on much, but I think they are right on this issue.

I am not a big fan of how Gary has chosen to address some issues dealing with the county, but Elderwatch and Grammnet needed to go. I also agree with the reasons stated for officers to drive county vehicles.

I think a recall is out of order and a waste of resources. I would not like to see the sherrif's dept go back to the way it was. Those who want it different should back a candidate for the next election. It will come soon enough.

There once was a sheriff named Wall Who was hell-bent on his own fall So many incidents Angered his constituents Wonder why he ever ran at all?

greyrider 9 years, 3 months ago

The position of sheriff is one with a great deal of power & responsibility, & should be held by someone of at least average integrity. Having anyone who feels they & their appointees are above the law is a dangerous situation for anyone in Routt County, & a disgrace to the citizens who have entrusted him with the position of Sheriff. Ignoring this will only pave the way for more problems in the future. If he gets away with this, what's next? The policies & programs of the past, & the problems with our current Sheriff are two separate issues. Replacing Wall now dose not mean we need to move backwards. Not agreeing with past policy is no reason to settle for second rate now & in the future. We need to send a message to future candidates for the position of Sheriff & replace Wall now before things get worse.

greyrider, GOOD JOB!!! THAT is all that needs said, again, GOOD JOB, you have put it in real words, and taken out all the other bs. so before it gets any worse, and it seems that it can, GET RID of the problem.

I don't think is (a) mistake anyone is concerned about, I think its more of the self-importance and demands, along with the fact that everyone else is paying for it. It's troubling that Wall would try and plant suspicion of other officers to save his own behind. What else is he will to do? Which of these cost options is (a) mistake?

  • Citizens pay your legal fees to fight with commissioners
  • Demand and dispute pay increases for non-qualified employees
  • Terminate experienced officers
  • Bootleg policies
  • Tax payer's pay for post certification for the Sheriff & Under Sheriff
  • Under Sheriff Accident
  • Demand county liability for off duty personal vehicle use
  • Hire Attorney to compose your letters
  • Cost of a trial Demand more money for coverage
  • Training for replacement Deputies
  • Speaking for all Sheriffs? Legal interpretation?
  • Eliminate children's drug programs
  • Cause division Commissioners

dimwitted, Just fyi, i've made alot of things happen in this valley over 25 plus years! You'd be surprised. You sound a lot like a RE-2 school employee I know! As usual, everyone voices their opinion here and you have. Nuff said.

Cojustice, You're right on with the facts. Nobody knows better that those who currently serve as cops. The Wall chronies will whine about the negatives, but their the same people who have more liberal approaches to issues than most. Recall! Let the people decide again for their mistakes.

MtnWarlock 9 years, 3 months ago

local, Conservative, liberal, who ever wants to run that will obey the law of office as an example of good standing and reputation. I agree, that Walls election competitors had a few issues as well. I do believe change was needed! I don't believe I hate Mr Wall, I don't like the double standard he represents, like many others that I share the same opinion with. I understand that people make mistakes, unlike Dr D who's dirty laundry was brought out to the fore front by scheme. I guess we live in a age where it's OK to accept huge discrepancies and lack of accountability, in leadership rolls. Maybe that image was reflected under political offices as far as we remember. we just did'nt have the media or forums to spread it around like we do now. As a whole, we're just desensed by it. If Wall stay's in office, I hope this was a huge wake up call for him! If not, RECALL!

As I heard once before the masses are asses. Wall wasn't Post certified and got elected. The new cop in oak creek is on the job 2 months and gets promoted to Sgt. Try any of that in a real town and see where it gets you. LA has what a bout 18,000 cops are any of them getting promoted or waiting until after they have the job for eight months before they go to the Academy? Not!!! and watch what you say about sexy female undergarments as the prudes in town may misconscrew it for sexual harassment.
