Ski mountaineer talks about scaling 14ers

Chris Davenport is an Aspen-based professional Alpine skier and a 36-year-old father of two, expecting a third child in a couple of weeks. In just under one year, from Jan. 22, 2006, to Jan. 19, 2007, Davenport skied from the summit of all 54 of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks. He tacked on ski descents of the Grand and Middle Teton, Mount Rainer, Mount Adams and Mount McKinley. Before Davenport heads to the Alps, he recently passed through Steamboat Springs to present a slideshow on the project and to sign the book he authored, titled "Ski the 14ers," which chronicles the journey. The coffee table book retails for $49.95 and is available at Epilogue Book Co., Off the Beaten Path and online at www.wolverinepublishing.com. The filmed version (produced by Oceanic Productions' Ben Galland) is tied up in legislation with the U.S. Forest Service, who had originally denied Davenport a commercial filming permit in designated wilderness areas - where roughly 2/3 of the peaks, and the some of steepest lines, are located.

Kay Weinland: Elections secure

We are confident that fair and accurate elections have been held and will continue to be held in our state. As elections administrators, we are dedicated to serving and fulfilling the public trust.

Bill and Cathie Voorhees: Recall Sheriff Wall

Your article on Sheriff Wall's license suspension points out a serious problem we, the citizens of Routt County, need to take action to correct. As summarized below, Sheriff Wall's actions since he was elected have clearly shown he is not the correct person for the position of Routt County Sheriff. It is now time for the citizens to begin a recall process and appoint a qualified person for sheriff who has integrity : We pay taxes which are used to pay his salary, and we are not getting value for our money. He has shown that he considers himself and his department above the restrictions of the law and of county policies. We can not receive the law enforcement we are paying for when Sheriff Wall himself has such disregard of both the laws and the county regulations as he has demonstrated.

Kerry Hart: Would you like that degree super-sized?

The gigantic department store chain culture that has all but eliminated small specialty businesses has not left education untouched. The small, proprietary specialty shops of an older era were either put out of business or were bought and merged into the big business supermarkets and super department stores of today - where the wide array of commodities are standardized and available under one roof. Similarly, the wide array of course offerings at colleges and universities have also become, to some degree, standardized.

Haley O'Brien: Centuries-old Christmas carols about more than the holiday

Christmas season is often signaled by the change in music on the radios; the day after Thanksgiving (and even sooner), music in stores and radio stations play songs that we somehow know all the words to. "Winter Wonderland" and "Let it Snow" are some of the classics; then there are songs with a new age twist, like "All I Want for Christmas is You."

Lorin Paley: Food makes the festival

Hanukkah is over now, but my memory has a funny way of playing tricks on me. When it comes to the holidays, I can't remember them by their history or prayers. Rather, I recall the prayers, traditions and history of the holidays by the food we eat. The preparation, smell and taste of food is my guide to the Jewish holidays. As a joke explains, all Jewish holidays go as follows: They tried to kill us, we won, so let's eat!

Paula Ninger: Hallmark holidays

We've all grown accustomed to the stores setting up for Christmas in September. But are we forgetting the true meaning of the holidays with our materialistic mindsets?

Sarah Hagenbuch: Routt County Conservation District

The Routt County Conservation District would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season. The RCCD office will be closed Monday to Wednesday and Dec. 31 to Jan. 1, 2008, for the holidays.

Jimmy Westlake: 'The Christmas Star'

Two thousand years ago, St. Matthew recorded that something extraordinary appeared in the sky over Bethlehem of Judea that heralded the birth of Jesus. For centuries, astronomers have wondered about the nature of this Star of Bethlehem. Was it a one-time supernatural event never seen before and never seen since? Although that is a possibility, it seems unlikely that St. Matthew would have been the only person to record the appearance of an amazing event like that.

Molly Parsons: Committing to a New Year

Inhale, exhale, it's finally here: a brand new year. It is the time of year that many experience that refreshing feeling in which they want to turn the page and start a new chapter in their lives. It is time to make a New Year's resolution. Time to climb up to the attic and dust off your running shoes. It is time to finally start consuming your fair share of vegetable servings each day and time to give up the chocolate cake. Maybe your goal is to raise your GPA, become more involved in activities at your school, or go to state competition for your sport, or maybe you want to decide where you want to go to college or participate in more community service. No matter what New Year's resolution you make, the goal is generally directed to bettering yourself as a person in some way.

I'm lucky. I didn't win the lottery or strike it rich in Las Vegas, and Paris Hilton wasn't my high school sweetheart - I'm not even sure I was in high school when she was born.

Conservative commentary: What ever happened to Christmas?

It's been about 35 years or so since the great Frank Sinatra recorded a beautiful song by this title on his album, "A Sinatra Family Christmas." Whoever wrote it must have been prescient to the tune of at least a few decades. The lyrics proclaim that "Christmas has gone and left no traces." Well, we're getting close.
