Accident stops traffic on C.R. 129

Man injured in head-on collision between dump truck and pickup

— An accident on Routt County Road 129 this morning injured a Clark man and has stopped traffic about five miles north of U.S. Highway 40.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Melissa Fowler said the 49-year-old man lost control of his Ford pickup while driving southbound around a curve on C.R. 129, near mile marker 5 1/2 north of Steamboat Springs.

The man crossed a double yellow line and collided head-on with a northbound dump truck driven by Wayne Edward Miles, 34, of Craig. Miles did not sustain any injuries in the crash, Fowler said.

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue arrived on scene about 10:30 a.m., and freed the Clark man from his vehicle. He sustained unknown injuries, but was conscious and communicating with rescue personnel at the scene. He was transported by ambulance to Yampa Valley Medical Center for treatment.

County Road 129 is expected to reopen later this afternoon.

I drove up there many times last year to go snowmobiling. Why doesn't county treat the road? The road is usually fine up to the airport/city limits but after that it can be an ice sheet. Sure it's plowed pretty well but the ice build up can be real nasty.

What is a human life worth? Surely the cost of making that road safer?
