— Steamboat Springs School Board members want help from the community in their search for an interim superintendent.

"It's part of our dedication to our community involvement in decision and input," School Board President Denise Connelly said. "What we want to do is communicate more and to re-establish lines of communication that has fallen by the wayside the past nine years in policy governance."

She said the School Board is looking for volunteers, including stakeholders such as school principals and assistant principals, school district directors, teachers, support staff, parents and other members of the community.

"We'll be soliciting questions from the community as a whole," said Connelly, who said the committee will not vote on the interim superintendent, but will be able to sit in on the interview process and provide input to the board.

Anne Muhme, the district's assistant to the superintendent, said the board will select two representatives from each stakeholder group.

"We sent an e-mail out to district staff, and some people have already volunteered and expressed interest in joining the committee," she said.

On Aug. 10, the School Board voted to buy out the remaining two years of former Superinten-dent Donna Howell's contract, paying her $270,000 in addition to the $37,500 owed to her for personal and vacation leave.

Connelly noted that the district has a list of "very qualified candidates" that has been developed from suggestions from the Colorado Association of School Boards along with those who have contacted the district independently.
