Search, Rescue teams find hikers at Fish Creek Falls
Steamboat Springs Two 17-year-old boys were rescued from the Fish Creek Falls area Thursday night after they became disoriented and lost during a hike.
Routt County Search and Rescue President Randall Hannaway said the boys began hiking from the Fish Creek Falls trailhead at about 5 p.m. and called one of the boy's fathers at about 7 p.m. to tell the father they were coming down.
The boy's father called for help at about 9 p.m. after the boys had not appeared at the Fish Creek Falls parking lot, he said.
Two Search and Rescue teams began combing the area for the boys, who had cell phone reception where they were, he said.
The boys apparently saw lights from a Search and Rescue all-terrain vehicle, which helped crews locate the boys.
Using the boy's cell phone light, crews directed the boys how to get down, he said.
"I think they were grateful to see us," he said.
The boys were wearing T-shirts and shorts, and one was not wearing shoes, he said.
"It could have gone south real fast," Hannaway said. "Overall it was a great mission."
One of the boys was taken to the hospital to be treated for dehydration, he said. The other boy was fine.
They said neither of the boys was dressed appropriately and did not have extra food or clothing with them.
