Development Rights applications due Sept. 5

Applications for the Routt County Purchase of Development Rights Program are due Sept. 5 to the Routt County Board of Commissioners Office in the Courthouse Annex. Qualified projects must relate to protecting agricultural operations, natural areas and open lands. In general, the projects protect the unique Western heritage of the Yampa Valley for its residents and visitors. Volunteers needed at Emerald City Opera

The Emerald City Opera needs volunteers for its 2007 season. Opportunities for short-term volunteering and longer-term commitments are available. Volunteers are needed in August to help with party planning, production ushering, costuming, concessions and more. The production dates are Aug. 17 and 19. Volunteers also are invited to help in an ongoing capacity with administrative tasks in the downtown office, to help with the children's opera troupe and to help plan events and meetings for Guild members. Stock Dog Challenge takes place Sept. 1 to 3

The Steamboat Stock Dog Challenge is Sept. 1 to 3 at the Stanko Ranch. A photo contest called "Dogs At Work" will be featured as part of the stock dog event. Dog owners are encouraged to submit photos of their dogs at work, specifically dogs that help their owners at their jobs. Working dogs can include hunting, sport, service, shop, office, construction, rafting and stock dogs.

Take an 8-by-10-inch photo of your dog to either Steamboat Vet, Paws 'n Claws 'n Things, Sasak Trailers, the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association and Elk River Farm and Feed by Aug. 17. Write your name, your dog's name, your place of work, address and phone number on the back of the photo. Submitted photos will be displayed during the Stock Dog Challenge. Contest winners will be determined by a vote, with each vote costing $1. Proceeds will be donated to the Routt County Humane Society.
