Steamboat Springs With practices slated to begin Aug. 13 for Steamboat Springs High School fall athletic teams, the school district still is looking to fill the head coaching vacancies for cross-country and cheerleading.
Former cross-country coach Glen Light left to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his full-time job, and former cheerleading coach Kathy Jones left to pursue other opportunities.
A third opening, for the girl's softball team, recently was filled when the district hired Maggie Garcia. Donna Ryan previously coached the team.
High school Principal Mike Knezevich said in an e-mail Thursday he still is busy hiring teachers for the year and there's a possibility that some of the new teachers may come with the experience or desire to take the vacant coaching positions.
"I have two to three individuals who have been hired who have previously expressed interest in the fall coaching positions," Knezevich wrote. "They have not arrived in Steamboat as of yet, and when they do and I can contact them, I will do so."
Knezevich said he couldn't make decisions on coaching positions until he confers with athletics director Richard Lee.
Lee was unavailable for comment Thursday.
According to Knezevich, the positions have been posted on numerous Web sites and in newspapers since last spring. Knezevich said he wants to fill the positions as soon as possible, but the time commitment, level of pay and cost of living in Steamboat "limits our pool."
A head cross-country coach - depending on experience and whether he or she is a district employee - can expect to make between $2,420 and $6,200, according to the district's recently revised Extra Duty Pay Plan. A head cheerleading coach can expect to make between $710 and $2,400 for the season.
"Obviously, these positions are important for our students, their families and our school, and we want to fill these ASAP," Knezevich wrote.
Some coaching positions also remain unfilled for winter and spring sports, including a girls 'C' team basketball coach, a speech coach and a head track and field coach.
