Marilyn Harris, 14, of Steamboat Springs reacts as a lock of her hair is clipped by Mountain Hair Studio stylist Kat Lish on Saturday at the Locks of Love "Hair Raiser" event at the Center for Sports Medicine. Locks of Love provides hairpieces to children younger than 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
Steamboat Springs The Locks of Love "Hair Raiser" on Saturday collected enough hair to provide 23 hairpieces to children younger than 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
Event organizer Melissa Baumgartner was one of 13 participants, including two men, who had their hair snipped for the nonprofit organization Saturday at the Center for Sports Medicine in the Central Park Plaza.
"We had a least 230 inches of hair cut on Saturday," she said. "It's going to take me more than a year to grow it back, but I would love to turn this into an annual event."
Baumgartner said participants ranged from teenagers to seniors - men and women - all with the goal of giving something back for a good cause.
"And, in the end, we all got free haircuts," said Baumgartner, who noted hair stylists from the Brio, Bella and Maintain Hair salons donated their time to shape the chopped locks into new hairdos.
According to the Locks of Love Web site, the organization has helped more than 2,000 children across the United States and Canada to regain their self-esteem since 1998. Each wig has a value ranging up to $6,000.
Baumgartner said she had previously donated her hair, and she thought there were always people in Steamboat who had beautiful long hair - perfect for a Locks of Love wig.
