— The city of Steamboat Springs has approved $800,000 to repave city streets that are in need of repair, and for other improvement projects this summer.

Jim Weber, director of public works for the city, anticipates that Fish Creek Falls Road will be completed by early June.

"The early season heat of the summer and the traffic helps knead the chip stone into the pavement," he said. "This year we are using 3/8-inch chips instead of (larger) chips to provide a smoother base."

Area bicyclists will appreciate the smaller chips, and the city will try to get as much work done before July 4 and the other busy and high-traffic times of the summer.

Contractors and the weather can play a major role in the speed of the completion of the work.

"Rain is not good, and cold weather makes it hard for the emulsion to set," Weber said. "The last thing we want is tar oil kicked up on our cars."

The city also plans on replacing the Yahmonite Street Bridge.

"We're looking for the construction to be done by August, September or October," Weber said. "We are also doing a water main replacement on Downhill Drive. There has been corrosion issues, and we've done 10 to 12 repairs in the last year on one line."

Other city projects this summer include upsizing the sewer interceptor by James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge out to the lagoons near Riverside.

The widening of Colorado Highway 131 is expected to be completed this summer, and there will be a lot of ongoing construction at the base of Steamboat Ski Area and Ski Time Square, Weber said.
