— Soroco track and field coach David Bruner went into Saturday's meet at Glenwood Springs knowing the prior week had been spent working on relay exchanges.

While Bruner knows there still is work to be done before the league meet, regionals and state, he could only come away from Saturday happy with the results.

Seven of the Rams relay teams placed, helping Soroco to a eighth place finish in the girls and 18th place finish with the boys.

"I was really pleased with the effort," Bruner said. "They are improving every week, and that's all you can ask of them."

The girls were led by Sarajane Rossi (third in the 800-meter dash), Amber Larsen (fourth in the 3,200-meter dash), Traci Schlegel (eighth in the 300-meter hurdles) and Emily Hallenbeck (third in the triple jump).

The girls team also placed fifth in the 4x100 meter relay, fourth in the 4x200 meter relay, fourth in the 800 sprint medley and third in the 4x400 meter relay.

On the boys side, the 4x400 meter relay team finished sixth and the 4x800 meter relay team finished fifth.

With mostly schools from larger classifications finishing ahead of them, Bruner said the Rams are setting up well for a solid run at regionals with hopes of qualifying as many athletes as possible for state.

"Looking at (Class) 2A, we handled everybody," Bruner said. "With 2A teams, we were definitely in the top 3."

Although Bruner didn't have a full compliment of team members because of illnesses and prior commitments, he said he's excited for the Rams' next meet in Grand Valley on Tuesday.

There, he said, the Rams will compete against schools mostly in their classification.

"You've got to be pleased with the effort of your kids," he said. "We've got to stay healthy, but Wednesday should be a good measuring stick on where we're at."
