Steamboat Springs police officers work at the scene of an accident that occurred Sunday evening on U.S. Highway 40 near Walton Creek Road. No one was injured, and the driver of the vehicle was arrested for drunken driving.

— A Fort Collins man drove his Toyota Sequoia into a light post and speed limit sign on U.S. Highway 40 on Sunday evening, then jumped the median into oncoming traffic. No injuries resulted from a crash that could have been far worse.

Steamboat Springs police arrested George Schildge, 47, on suspicion of a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. Sgt. Nick Bosick said that Schildge refused all roadside tests for alcohol consumption, but was "highly intoxicated" when he collided head-on with a large light post that stood more than 25 feet tall before Schildge's sport utility vehicle knocked it over, onto the highway.

"He's lucky he didn't kill somebody," Bosick said.

Schildge was traveling westbound on U.S. 40, near the on-ramp from Mount Werner Road, when the accident occurred. His vehicle then crossed into eastbound traffic before coming to rest on the eastbound side of the highway.

No other passengers were in the car at the time of the accident, and no other vehicles were struck. Bosick said at least one vehicle on U.S. 40 "had to slam on the brakes" to avoid a collision. Schildge's Toyota received severe damage to the front and passenger side, and was towed from the scene at about 6:30 p.m. The accident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Schildge was taken to Routt County Jail on Sunday evening.

Steamboat Springs police also arrested Schildge on Feb. 24 for driving under the influence of alcohol, weaving and failure to report an accident.
