Welcome home to the New West

Steamboat Springs may have a reputation as a cowboy ski town, but some of the valley's finest homes are beginning to reflect a more sophisticated look. It's not unheard of to see a Remington bronze sculpture of a bucking bronc showcased on a French side table. The room might be set off by a pair of bright Asian wicker chairs in what is becoming a new vision of the Rocky Mountain West.
Families with roots in places as varied as Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, the Upper Midwest and South Florida all want to recognize Steamboat's Western traditions in their second homes, area designers say. But when they entertain friends, they don't want to be perceived as having gone overboard with Western kitsch.
Consequently, chaps hanging on the wall and steel cutouts of moose are fading from some, but certainly not all Routt County homes.
