Steamboat drops two to Glenwood Springs

— The Steamboat Springs baseball team is just a hit away.

For the third time this year, the Sailors lost by a run and had their opportunities to take control of the game.

On Saturday, in the first game of a doubleheader with Glenwood Springs, Steamboat left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 3-2.

"It's just those key hits," Steamboat manager Dave Roy said. "We're just a hit away."

The Sailors were trailing 3-1 heading into the seventh before Colin Boyle drove in a run to bring the Sailors within one. With senior Brian Aragon at the plate and the bases loaded, Roy said he thought the Sailors had tied it up, but Aragon's hit got caught up in the wind and resulted in the third out.

"We didn't give them the game and we had opportunities to win," Roy said. "We just didn't get them."

Sophomore Alex Wood pitched seven innings, Elliot Girard went 2-for-4 with a RBI, Taylor Anderson went 1-for-3, Boyle finished 1-for-3 and catcher Marc Hall finished 2-for-3.

In the second game of the doubleheader Steamboat fell 7-1.

Anderson started the game for Steamboat and gave up five runs in the first inning. He settled down after the first allowing only two more earned runs, only one of which was earned.

Unfortunately the Sailors still couldn't get the bats going. Glenwood limited Steamboat to six hits, while the Sailors stranded seven runners.

"We had some opportunities to bring them in," Roy said, "but we never mounted anything that could have created a win."

With Moffat County up next on Tuesday, Roy said he senses Steamboat is on the verge of breaking through.

"We're so close," he said. "These kids are great and are very resilient. I'm looking forward to a great game against Moffat County."

Roy said the game may be played in Steamboat at Emerald Blue. He said it depends on if the field is ready by Monday.
