Statement from Board President Denise Connelly

The DeVincentis e-mails

— As president of the Steamboat Springs Board of Education, it is important for me to address the community regarding the situation that has arisen in the past week. I want everyone to know that this unfortunate situation is not being ignored. We are trying to address all aspects of this situation to determine what will be the best course of action for our district and our students.

The Board has been consulting with our legal counsel and knowledgeable colleagues, as well as listening to all community input and feedback. We are considering all options, but at this time, we are still trying to ascertain all pertinent facts. As a board, we do not believe that a rash decision without accurate information is beneficial to the district or our students.

Our community has always been supportive of our children's education and this board appreciates that value more than ever. We are committed to doing what is best for our students, our district and community. Despite the stresses at this time, we are faithfully keeping all of these stakeholders in mind and our service to the students is our main priority.

While reading this letter, all I could think about is "what a load of garbage". Welcome to Connelly's house of cliche's. She's got all the right buzz words and textbook answers. What I'm hearing, though, is "let's see how long we can stall before doing anything, and hopefully this will all blow over". Guess what - it won't. John D. has done irreparable damage to the school district and has to go - NOW. And if the current board doesn't have the backbone to insist on his resignation, they should go too.

Recall Conolly too. Inaction is unacceptable, and her refusal to take a stance in this matter is irresponsible and a disservice to the community and the children of the district.

"Despite the stresses at this time, we are faithfully keeping all of these stakeholders in mind and our service to the students is our main priority."

Then serve the students Denise. Do the right thing.

As school board president she cannot say much more than that. Legal counsel is probably telling her that it was not legal for the emails to have been given to the SB Today. And so as school board president she should be careful about commenting on emails that the school district may have improperly released. She does not decide whether Dr D serves on the school board.

Also, it is not proper for one board member to ask another to resign. That is why it was correct for Pat Gleason to resign before publicly strongly criticizing other members of the school board.

That said, all of the school board members need to consider their comments and actions based upon what they now know about Dr D and ask themselves whether they can still retain public trust and can still be effective having previously sided with Dr D on issues like ignoring the wishes of Superintendent Howell and administrative staff when demanding to see administrative reviews and then noting there is a lack of trust in the superintendent's relationship with the school board.

It may not be proper for a single board member to ask another to resign and I agree that Pat's decision to leave before publicly criticizing was correct.

On the other hand, it is entirly proper for the board president to lead a board discussion that results in the rest of the board collectivly asking another member that has so conclusivley demostrated that he is unfit to serve, to resign. It is the duty of this board to ask for Dr. D's resignation.
