Applications for youth leadership due April 20

Applications for the 13th First Ascent Youth Leadership program are being accepted through April 20. The week-long resident program at Colorado Mountain College's Timberline Campus in Leadville is open to eighth- and ninth-graders who reside in the area served by CMC, which includes Routt County.

The program seeks students with leadership qualities and the potential to further develop through the program. To apply, students must submit an application form, including a statement of interest, and have a teacher submit a recommendation form.

First Ascent is available to students at no cost and provides experiential training that benefits participants personally, academically and within the community. It synthesizes team building, leadership and group dynamics. Program activities include rope courses, rock climbing, river rafting and a mountain climb. This year, the group is slated to climb Mount Elbert. Relevant academic subjects also are part of the curriculum.

For more information or to apply, call program director Mariana Velazquez-Schmahl at (970) 947-8357 or visit Brochures and applications also are available from middle school and high school counselors in Routt County.
