County gives $25,000 to Hayden project

The Routt County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday decided to commit $25,000 in taxpayer dollars to the expansion of a vocational education teaching facility in Hayden.

The contribution will be taken out of Routt County's 2008 general fund.

The Hayden School District has already raised nearly $600,000 for the project and has applied for a $500,000 grant. There has been overwhelming financial support from organizations and businesses for the building project, which would more than double the size of the current vocational education facilities. People have recognized a need for facilities to train a skilled labor force for the future to serve the region.

"We do have growing needs for a trained workforce : and we would like kids who grew up here to be able to stay here and work," said commissioner Diane Mitsch Bush.

"I think it's appropriate for us to fund this," commissioner Doug Monger said.

SK8 Church showing 'Passion of the Christ' film

Steamboat Springs residents are invited to attend a free showing of the film "Passion of the Christ" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Wildhorse Cinema in Wildhorse Marketplace.

The film is being presented by the local nonprofit organization Christ for Life SK8 Church.

Buck and Tara Chavarria said they began the organization as a way to reach out to Steamboat skateboarders and provide them an opportunity to combine their passion for skating with a relationship with Christ.

Due to the content of the film, children should be accompanied by adults, Chavarria said.

"It's a powerful film, and we're hoping this will be an opportunity for people to open doors or have conversations with people they've been meaning to," he said.

There are 145 seats available, and doors open at 7 p.m. There is only one showing of the film, he added.
