Steamboat girls lacrosse looks to future after loss to Boulder

Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs girls lacrosse team had the hustle and the chatter in its game Monday at Boulder. But the Sailors couldn't control the ball.
"The girls played well and really played hard," Steamboat coach Jenn Kirkpatrick said. "They ran hard with a lot of intensity, but Boulder just got to the balls first, coming up with the catches and the ground balls all over the field."
Steamboat, now 2-6 overall, lost to the undefeated Boulder squad, 18-2.
Maria Heilner scored both of the Sailors' goals, and Kirkpatrick said goalkeeper Courtney Adamo "came up with a lot of great saves" in the second half.
Kirkpatrick also credited the quality offensive pressure from attack wing Mollie Wunder.
"She came up with some great interceptions with passes around the goal and made all the catches," Kirkpatrick said.
Unfortunately, Boulder's transition game and production from its midfielders were too much for Steamboat. Kirkpatrick was still proud of the communication and strong play from her low defensive trio of Megan Lucas, Emily Stout and Kelsey Pierson.
"We've got a big week of practice ahead," Kirkpatrick said, looking forward to her team's next game against Colorado Academy, the state's No. 3-ranked team, according to www.laxpower.com. "We've got to work on settling the ball and calming down, making cuts and setting picks."
Steamboat plays Colorado Academy at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Gardner Field.
