Oak Creek If the Soroco football team ran track, they'd be a shoo-in to run the last leg of a relay.
For the second consecutive week, the Rams outscored and outplayed a team in the second half.
But for the second week, Soroco (1-4, 0-3 in league) left the football field looking for answers to their slow starts that doom them in Friday's 19-13 loss to Paonia.
After falling behind 19-0 five minutes into the second half, the Soroco football team staged a mighty comeback.
On a fourth and one play in the waning minutes of the third quarter, Joel Schlegel took a pitch around the right side, pulled up and hit David Roberts in stride for a 46-yard touchdown pass.
Then late in the fourth quarter, after forcing an Eagle punt, Ram quarterback Johnny DeCosta scampered into the end zone from 10 yards out.
On the next Eagle possession, the Rams held Paonia and got the ball with three minutes and 20 seconds left to go on their own 46-yard line.
After Levi Gonzales completed a 28-yard pass to Roberts on fourth and 11 play, the Rams found themselves in Paonia (4-1, 1-1) territory with momentum. But after an incompletion Soroco fumbled on the next play, leaving less than two minutes on the clock.
"They hung in there and they fought to the end," Ram head coach Andy Reust said. "I can't ask anymore of these guys:I thought we were going to pull it out but it didn't go our way again. We just got to keep plugging away."
Considering the Rams were still in the game after the first half, was a major victory in itself. The Rams struggled to move the ball offensively, gaining only 47 total yards in the first half. Conversely, the Eagles moved the ball on the ground and in the air with ease. Paonia quarterback C.J. Cannell threw for 133 first half yards and ran for an 11-yard touchdown, while Eagle running back Tanner Ridgway ran for 117 yards, including touchdowns of 64 and 10 yards.
"I wish I knew," Resut said when asked of why his team starts slow. "If I knew, I probably wouldn't be in this business. I would be making a fortune for a lot of coaches."
Still, Reust said he thinks his Rams are on the cusp of breaking out of their slump. The difference in winning and losing, he said, will be to put a complete game together.
" I just hope we can put a whole game together," Reust said. "We have yet to do that this year."
