Rams falter late

Despite leading games, Soroco fails to finish

— For the Soroco volleyball team, homecoming turned out to be both good and bad.

Playing league opponent Paonia, the Rams came out in each of the first three games with passion, grabbing the early lead in all three.

Then something happened.

Paonia was able to battle back and won in three games, 25-16, 26-24, 25-20.

"I don't know what happened," senior Gina Werremeyer said. "Maybe our minds got a little foggy because of homecoming."

With a packed gym, the Rams came out in the first game and inserted themselves right away. After battling back and forth, Soroco took an 8-7 lead. But then the Eagles racked up two consecutive aces and scored 15 of the next 23 points to take the game.

In the second game, the Rams again jumped out to leads of 9-4 and 19-15. But after a Eagle timeout, the Rams came out flat and allowed Paonia to take their first lead at 23-22, before going on to win 26-24.

"I think the energy was there," Werremeyer said. "I just think there were other things playing in the back of our mind."

In the last game Soroco led early, 5-3, but couldn't regroup from its two earlier defeats.

Despite the loss, Werremyer said the Rams can take only positives out of the game. For one, they were able to compete with a team many expect to finish at the top of the league, Werremyer said.

With half the season still left, Werremyer said she's confident the Rams will bounce back and finish off games.

"We've definitely been improving," she said. "Like coach (Betsy) Photos says, when the first win comes, the rest will follow."
