How to register
Anyone interested in registering his or her child or children in the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp's after-school art program, should contact instructor Virginia Barrett at (970) 393-0108. Classes run from Oct. 3 through Dec. 15 and cost $150 per student. Drop-in sessions are available for $20 per session.
Steamboat Springs Perry-Mansfield would like to expand its fall offerings, and Virginia Barrett has found what she believes to be the perfect solution.
Beginning Oct. 3 and lasting through Dec. 15, Barrett will teach a series of after-school art classes for children ages 7 to 16.
She is excited to begin next week.
"In all my classes, I try to find a happy medium in teaching them whatever technique we are doing and letting them use their imagination," Barrett said.
Barrett is the head of the art department at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp on Routt County Road 36.
Normally, Barrett leaves after the summer sessions, but she said the school would like to have activities during the fall months.
The classes will be offered every Tuesday through Friday except for the week of Thanksgiving. The cost for the 10-week session is $150 per student, but drop-in slots are available for $20 per session.
The cost covers all materials. Transportation from school to Perry-Mansfield is the responsibility of a parent or guardian, but Perry-Mansfield is close to the Strawberry Park campus, which Barrett hopes is convenient.
"We literally are a mile away," Barrett said. "It might not even be that far."
Tuesday's classes are from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. They are called "I Can Draw," and are open to children ages 9 to 11.
"I have a real drawing base and focus because so much art comes out of that," Barrett said. "Once they understand shape and line and form, it gives them a lot of freedom"
Wednesday's classes are from 4 to 5:30 p.m. They are called "Drawing For Expression," and are open to youth ages 12 to 16.
Thursday's classes are from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. They are called "Art Around the World," and are open to children ages 7 to 10.
"Every week it will be a different country we explore," Barrett said. "For example, if we were doing an African country, we might make some printed cloth or mats."
Friday's classes are from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. They are called "Art and Worlds," and are open to children ages 8 to 12.
"That's a combined class of exploring how to illustrate and use graphic work with creative writing," Barrett said. "We will make some handmade books."
Anyone interested in registering should contact Barrett at (970) 393-0108.
Classes begin next week, so Barrett would like those interested to register as soon as possible.
