Burger silences former teammates' jibing

Steamboat Springs — Admittedly, Steamboat tennis player Brian Burger was a little bit nervous before taking on his former team.
The Steamboat Springs junior had played at Evergreen High School last year before coming to Steamboat this fall. Before the match Saturday, many of Burger's former teammates were giving him a hard time, even chanting 'beat Burger.'
So when Burger, who had to sit out several matches because of CHSAA transfer rules, and playing partner Brian Aragon took the court for their No. 1 doubles match, they wanted to make a statement.
"I was a little angry," Aragon said. "They came in with all sorts of cockiness and were talking smack. We just wanted to shut them up quickly."
And did they ever quiet Burger's former team.
Burger and Aragon quickly dispatched of Henry Broerew and Curt Dieter of Evergreen 6-3, 6-1.
It was a bittersweet win for Burger.
"I was definitely a little nervous," Burger said. "I just really wanted to beat them."
The match just highlighted another successful day for the Steamboat Springs tennis team.
The Sailors (6-2) won six of seven matches and looked sharp in doing so.
"This team has really come together," head coach John Aragon said. "As a team, they're playing with more and more intensity. Every match there is a little more pride and each member is contributing."
Along with Burger and Aragon, the No. 2 doubles team of Jesse Schaller and Dylan Roberts continued to play well together winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Both sets of doubles teams are now undefeated.
Coach Aragon said he was pleased with the way his team played. No singles player or doubles team has more than three losses on the season. The Sailor's three top singles players- Andrew Hoing, Ramsey Bernard and Jordan Bernard - are a combined 15-6 this year.
Aragon said that all adds up to a team that is poised to do well at the regional tournament in Montrose on Oct. 6.
"There's going to be some tough competition," coach Aragon said of regionals. "It will be great and exciting to play a worthy opponent. If they can ovoid the negatives and keep the confidence going this should be the team to beat."
