Young writers contest open to local students

Off the Beaten Path Bookstore and the Hayden, South Routt and Steamboat Springs School districts are combining to host a young writers contest this fall.
The contest is open to middle school and high school students, and awards will be given to the top three short stories in the following genres: fantasy, western, science fiction or historical fiction.
Students should submit a word-processed short story in one of those categories. Stories should be 1,000 words or less. Entries must be received by Nov. 1 and should include the author's full name, address and phone number.
Send all entries to Young Writers Contest, attention Lisa Ruff, Steamboat Springs School District, P.O. Box 77438, Steamboat Springs, CO, 80477.
The awards will be handed out at a special evening at Off the Beaten Path. Students will share their work and receive feedback from local authors. The winners also will receive gift certificates to Off the Beaten Path.
Soroco Homecoming week under way
Soroco's Homecoming week is set. The week concludes with the semi-formal dance, "A Rendezvous in Paris," at 9 p.m. Saturday. Powder Puff football is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the bonfire is at 8 p.m. Wednesday. A school barbecue for all students and staff is Wednesday. The chili cook-off is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Power volleyball follows at 7 p.m. The parade is at 1:45 p.m. Friday, and volleyball begins at 4 p.m. Football is at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
