Kremmling All week in practice, Soroco head football coach Andy Reust preached to his players not to give up the big play.
Unfortunately, just 15 seconds into the game Friday night, the Rams (1-3, 0-2 in league) already found themselves down 6-0.
On West Grand's first play from scrimmage, quarterback Mackenzie Widener hooked up with Tucker Roderick for a 65-yard touchdown pass.
It was only a sign of things to come.
The Mustangs (2-2, 1-1) scored on four of their first six possessions in the first half Friday night - including two more touchdown passes from Widener - en route to a 34-8 win against the Rams.
"We talked all week about it," Reust said. "The big play haunts us."
Conversely, Soroco's offense wasn't able to move the ball against a stout Mustang defense. In the first half, the Rams had only one first down and could muster only 33 yards of total offense. They had four three-and-outs and a turnover on downs.
"We need to get back to basics and get off the line of scrimmage," Reust said.
In the second half, the Mustangs squashed any thoughts the Rams might have had of a comeback. On its first possession, West Grand took only four plays before Barry Klotz scored from 26 yards out. Soroco scored late in the fourth quarter, when backup quarterback Levi Gonzalez rolled to his left and found David Roberts for a 27-yard touchdown score. The two-point conversion made it 34-8 with only seconds left.
For a West Grand team coming off one of its worst defeats in school history against Hayden - a 38-6 loss- Mustangs coach Chris Brown was ecstatic with the way his team responded.
"We blocked this game, and it gave us a chance to do some stuff," he said. "It makes a world of difference when you block. Tonight, we thought we could throw on them, and we did."
Reust said he was pleased with the way his team played in the second half - outscoring the Mustangs 8-7 - but he said his team has to be more physical. One of the reasons the Rams haven't been able to keep up with the physicality of some teams this year is because they have been marred by injuries, Reust said.
"We played much better in the second half," he said. "But we've got to more physical. Because of injuries, we couldn't do a whole lot of hitting this year. This was only the second game that offensive line has played together."
Still, with the homecoming game this week against Paonia, Reust said he expects his team will play better.
"I hope we do," he said. " I really do."
