Volleyball coach hopes slump ends

— Although the Soroco Volleyball team lost in four games Friday night to West Grand - 28-26, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19 - coach Betsy Photos thinks the Rams are on the cusp of breaking out of their slump.

Against West Grand, Soroco battled back and forth with the Mustangs in all four games. They led at moments in all of the games but were only able to pull out a lone victory.

The reason: mental lapses at key points in the games, Photos said.

"We need to focus on the reason we get into doing well and then fall into those lapses," Photos said. "Those lapses are getting fewer and farther between, though."

In the first game, the Rams and Mustangs exchanged point after point. At one juncture, Soroco led by three points, and then West Grand came back and led by three points at 23-20. The Rams clawed their way back into the game, but West Grand eventually won, 28-26.

The next two games were similar because neither team could go on an extended run. In the second game, the Rams did all the little things necessary to pull out the win. In the third game, the Mustangs did all of those things right.

Heading into the fourth game, Photos said she wanted her team to play with fire, and from the beginning of the game they did. However, towards the end, with the Mustangs leading 19-17, Soroco fell into one of those lapses. West Grand scored six of the final eight points to put the Rams away.

Still, Photos said she is seeing more of the team that played so well earlier in the season.

"It feels like the chemistry is back," she said. "We're starting to play real well and are starting to play together."
