They're back

Brewglass Boys reunite to play their greatest hits

Like many unfinished relationships, the Brewglass Boys disbanded but never had their "break-up" conversation.

"We just kind of fell apart without him," upright bass player Tim Cunningham said about the departure of Mike Yob, the band's singer and front man.

"It just kind of stopped and was not possible without Yob," added mandolin player Greg Vulevich. "We couldn't think of anybody to replace him. He was the heart and soul of the band."

Yob moved away to go back to school and is returning to the Yampa Valley this weekend for a wedding and a much-needed reunion gig. The band will play its greatest hits tonight at the Steamboat Yacht Club.

"It's high-energy traditional bluegrass with a ski town flavor," Yob said. "I have a feeling I'm going to catch some flak for that. I always get made fun of by the band."

The Brewglass Boys have a repertoire of between 100 and 150 songs they played on a regular basis during their five-year stint. They were a pretty informal band with no agenda that began as a couch band, Vulevich said.

"We were a bunch of local guys getting together and playing some bluegrass music," guitar player Graham Waters said. "It was just that the bond was so tight. Some nights when we were really on, it was a really good feeling. It was kind of magical for us."

All of the band members look forward to getting to play together again.

"I'm excited to see all the familiar faces that I only see when we play," Waters said. "A lot of the people live in different parts of the country, and many are not even in town anymore."

Those who know the band know that talking about the Brewglass Boys can be a tongue twister.

"We have trouble saying Brewglass Boys, too," banjo player Von Wilson said. "I have to say it very slow."
