Gardner Field to be rededicated

The new, improved Gardner Field at Steamboat Springs High School will be rededicated tonight at halftime of the Sailors' game against Eagle Valley. Family members of Clarence Gardner will be present for the dedication.
Steamboat Springs — A rededication of Gardner Field will take place tonight at halftime of the Steamboat Springs-Eagle Valley football game.
Gardner Field had new turf, as well as an entrance, installed during the summer.
On one side of the entrance, there is a granite slab inscribed with the names of the people who donated to the field project.
On the other side, there is a granite slab with an inscription explaining the origin of Gardner Field's name.
The field was originally dedicated to Clarence Gardner in 1968. Gardner served as principal of the elementary, middle and high schools in his career.
Principal Mike Knezevich said the project was particularly special because of all the people and companies that donated labor and supplies.
The project, with an estimated price tag of about $500,000, was funded by private donations and $250,000 from the city's Education Fund Board, which allocates revenue from the city's half-cent sales tax for education.
"It really does leave a legacy for the next generation of kids that come through this high school," Knezevich said. "They'll have something to be proud of. It's a living legacy of what the school and community can accomplish."
Before tonight's game there will be a donor party. At halftime, Knezevich and Rick Garth will briefly speak about the facelift to Gardner Field. Relatives of Clarence Gardner will be on hand for the rededication.
