Steamboat Springs This weekend's Steamboat Springs Combined Club Championship determined which locals are at the top of their golf game.
Butch Boucher, who has won the city championship twice before, gained the title of champion along with DJ Edwards in the women's division. This is the second time Edwards has won the three-day tournament. Rounds were played at Catamount Ranch and Club on Friday, Sheraton Steamboat Golf Club on Saturday and Haymaker Golf Course on Monday. Despite soggy weather throughout the weekend, 61 players made it through all 54 holes of the tournament.
"I'm stoked," said Edwards, after shooting an 83 at Haymaker on Sunday. "I was really, really nervous."
Edwards took the lead early in the tournament by shooting a 76 at Catamount on Sunday.
"She just zoned in on everything," said Barb Simms, who played with Edwards and finished second in her flight. "She could not make a mistake. She put a lot of pressure on us."
On Saturday, Edwards shot a 90 at the Sheraton course.
"The Sheraton plays really, really long," Edwards said.
Boucher shot a 74 at Catamount, 73 at the Sheraton and another 74 at Haymaker to take the men's title.
"I've been hitting the ball well," Boucher said walking off the ninth hole green at Haymaker. "We're lucky to play these courses in any type of tournament."
Tournament director and first assistant golf professional at Haymaker Tim Fuhrer said the soggy weather presented some big challenges for the players, but maintenance crews and the golf course superintendents have kept the courses in great shape.
"They're working really hard behind the scenes to get the courses in shape for the tournaments," Fuhrer said.
This is the fourth year of the championship tournament in its current format and it is always a highly anticipated event, Fuhrer said.
"It's a great opportunity for everyone to play three 18-hole courses in Steamboat," Fuhrer said. "They're outstanding players and they keep getting better."
He said the highlight of the weekend was Edward's play.
"DJ shot 76 in the rain at Catamount, which was an awesome round," Fuhrer said.
