Boy shot in apparent hunting accident stable
A 12-year-old boy was sent to the Yampa Valley Medical Center on Sunday after an apparent hunting accident in North Routt County.
Routt County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Bond said the incident is still being investigated, but it appeared another juvenile accidentally shot the boy with a .50-caliber black powder rifle sometime Sunday morning while they were hunting with an adult near Sand Mountain off Routt County Road 62. The boy was shot in the abdomen, and Bond characterized the injury as a "real bad flesh wound." It appeared the bullet may have grazed the boy's abdomen and it did not appear like any organs were damaged, he said. Bond said the boy remained conscious and alert after the accident. On Sunday evening Bond said the boy was stable.
