Hayden draws Sargent in first round of playoffs

Hayden's 21-0 league win at Meeker on Friday awarded the Tigers with the Western Slope League's co-championship and secured it an automatic berth to the Colorado High School Activities Association's 16-team 1A playoff bracket.
With the No. 8 seed, Hayden will face No. 9 Sargent (Monte Vista) for its first-round game at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hayden.
While they both have 8-1 overall records, the Sargent Farmers are coming off a 28-0 loss at home to Southern Peaks Conference champion Del Norte - a team that lost to Dolores, which Hayden beat 21-6.
The winner of the first-round will have to face the winner of No. 1-seed Limon and No. 16-seed Sanford.
A home win for the Tigers will likely face them with a tough second-round challenge against Limon, the 9-0 South Central Conference champions and three-time defending state champions.
Due to its Oct. 13 win over Hayden, Grand Valley secured a higher seed (No. 6), but has a difficult pairing against Wray, who emerged in third place from the competitive North Central conference.
Western Slope League teams Paonia (13th seed) and Meeker (12th seed) also made the tournament.
