Hayden resident Sam Haslem has been honored with the Leckenby Pioneer Award, which recognizes a Routt County resident who has greatly contributed to the lifestyle or culture of the area. The award began as a way to recognize the Leckenbys' contributions to Routt County. Haslem was nominated for the award because of his accomplishments with the Routt County Extension Office. He worked to expand the Routt County Fair by bringing water and electricity access to the fairgrounds and by mentoring generations of 4-H youth. The Stanley L. Larson Award, which honors a deceased Routt County resident who made a major contribution to Routt County, recognized Clarence W. Light. Annabeth Light Lockhart accepted the award on behalf of her father. Light was one of F.M. Light's sons and played a key role in building the downtown Steamboat store into regional franchise.

Hayden is continuing its search for a new police chief. The town has been without a chief since Jody Lenahan retired on Oct. 6. The application deadline is 1 p.m. Friday. Hayden Town Manager Russ Martin said the town had four applications as of Tuesday. Martin would not disclose the names of the applicants. He did say one is a law enforcement officer in Routt County, but is not with the Hayden Police Department. Two have applied from the Western Slope and one lives outside Colorado.

Pay for substitute teachers has increased in the Steamboat Springs School District. On Monday, the Steamboat Springs School Board voted to raise certified substitute teachers' pay to $110 per day. It previously was $85. Non-certified substitute teachers will make $95, an increase of $15 per day. Non-certified substitute teachers must obtain a one-year substitute authorization from the state to teach in a classroom.

In sports, the cards have been dealt for Steamboat Springs boys soccer. Sunday morning, the Sailors were awarded the No. 23 seed in their 32-team class 4A state tournament bracket. The first round game pits Steamboat, which is 9-5-1 overall, against No. 10-seeded Longmont. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. today. The winner of the first round will play the winner of the game between No. 7 Niwot and No. 26 Evergreen on Saturday.
