Highway closed after unhitched trailer struck
U.S. Highway 40 was closed for a short time Monday morning after a woman hit a trailer that had come loose from the truck that it was being pulled by.
Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Jim Copley said the accident occurred around 11 a.m. at the base of Rabbit Ears Pass when 50-year-old Audrey Bortz of Clark, hit a trailer carrying a load of wood that had come unhitched from the truck that was pulling it.
The truck's driver, Christopher Cole, 27, of Steamboat Springs, was making a right onto U.S. 40 when the trailer came unhitched and swung into the left lane of traffic, Copley said.
The woman was complaining about slight neck pain after the accident, but did not want to be taken to the hospital, he said.
Cole was cited for not having safety chains for the trailer, driving an unsecured load and driving with expired plates.
Copley said Cole's hitch was the wrong size for the trailer, that he wasn't using safety chains and that the load of wood he was carrying was not tied down.
Bortz's red Toyota 4-Runner was "totaled" after the accident, Copley said.
