Steamboat adds flights to La Guardia for ski season

There will be direct jet flights between New York's La Guardia Airport and Steamboat Springs this winter. Andy Wirth, vice president of marketing for American Skiing Co., announced the flights Wednesday at the Steamboat Springs Chamber resort Association luncheon.

Chris Diamond, Off the Beaten Path honored

Chris Diamond won the Navigator Award as the Business Person of the Year Wednesday at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association's annual luncheon. Diamond is president of the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. He was recognized for his civic involvement, charitable contributions and his leadership on improvements at Yampa Valley Regional Airport and at the base of the ski area.

No problems at high school

School is safe, principal says, despit ebomb threat

Attendance at Steamboat Springs High School was down "a little" Wednesday, but the building, which received a bomb threat warning of a Wednesday detonation, is safe and secure, principal Mike Knezevich said. Knezevich said all students with a parent who works at the high school came to classes Wednesday, which Knezevich said spoke to the safety of the building.

Steamboat faces No. 10 Longmont in state soccer

Sunday morning, the Colorado High School Activities Association's seeding committee awarded the Sailors the No. 23 seed in their 32-team 4A state tournament bracket. The first round game pits Steamboat (9-5-1 overall) against No. 10-seeded Longmont (11-3-1). Kickoff is at 6 p.m. today.

Keyek, Mayberry earn recognition

At the start of the local golf season, 64 men and 16 women began a quest to add their names to the Steiner Cup. After a summer of golf, Andy Keyek and Anne Mayberry rose to the top of the field and earned the right to have their names engraved on the Cup, which was named in honor of Vic Steiner, a longtime Steamboat resident who was a ranger at Haymaker Golf Course until losing a battle with cancer in October 2000.</p

Trucks can continue to deliver coal to the Hayden Station power plant even though all the road improvements have not been completed on Routt County Road 27. On Tuesday, Routt County commissioners voted to extend Xcel's temporary special use permit for another year until November 2007.

2:23 a.m. A drunken 24-year-old Steamboat Springs man got lost driving in the 39000 block of Routt County Road 33, and pulled onto private property. When officers arrived, they arrested the man on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Issues won't go away

The education of our children is the responsibility of everyone in the Steamboat Springs community. Adequately paid personnel and safe, well-designed buildings are basics for optimum education.

Goldberg on right track

Jonah Goldberg's column on Oct. 20 ("Iraq was a Worthy Mistake") was well reasoned and logical. It was a bit of a surprise given that in the past Goldberg has been a staunch supporter of the war in Iraq, to the point of blindly following White House dogma without question. Alas, despite his reasoned tone he still missed a few facts that are worth emphasizing.
