Illegal immigration and border security are the primary topics for a public meeting today hosted by Republican Congressional candidate Scott Tipton. Tipton, a small business owner from Cortez, will meet with residents at noon at Centennial Hall. Tipton faces incumbent Democrat John Salazar, a San Luis Valley farmer, in the third congressional district race.
Early voting began today. Residents can vote early Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Routt County Courthouse Annex at 136 Sixth Street. Early voting is weekdays through Nov. 3. Get all your election information at steamboatpilot.com/election2006.
The Steamboat Springs School Board will choose between two applicants to fill a vacancy on the board tonight. The board meets at 6:30 p.m. in Centennial Hall. The two applicants for the board are Laura Anderson and Jerry Kozatch. The board seat came open in August when Tom Miller Freutel announced he was resigning to focus on his business.
In sports, the Steamboat Springs Sailors wrapped up a playoff berth with their 31-6 win over the Glenwood Springs Demons on Friday night. The Sailors are 5-1 in the Western Slope League and 7-1 overall. This week, Steamboat faces Rifle, who is undefeated in league play. The winner likely will be the Western Slope League champion.
The Sailors volleyball team will be the No. 4 seed at the district volleyball tournament. The Sailors lost to league champion Battle Mountain on Saturday. Battle Mountain will host the district tournament this Saturday.
