Youth orchestra event registration under way

Registration is under way for the All Yampa Valley Youth Orchestra Extravaganza, a three-day event giving youth musicians an opportunity to play a variety of music with a staff of music educators, culminating in a concert at the Steamboat Mountain Theater on Nov. 17. Students are invited to participate on the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion. The enrollment fee is $25. Call 879-9008, ext. 107, or e-mail chamberorchestra@steamboatspringsarts.com to register.

Training for childcare providers available

Child Care Network officials are encouraging anyone interested in becoming a licensed, family home childcare provider to call for more information about requirements and trainings. According to local officials, there is a need in Routt County for quality early childhood education, particularly for working families. Increasing the number of licensed, quality, family home childcare providers would begin to fill that need. For more information about licensing requirements and upcoming trainings, call the Child Care Network at 879-7330.

'Spit quit kits' available from VNA

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is handing out free "spit quit kits" for anyone interested in ending their addiction to snuff. According to the VNA, there is 4.8 mg of nicotine in every gram of moist snuff or chew, compared to 1.8 mg of nicotine in every cigarette. At 30 grams of snuff per tin, one can of snuff equals the nicotine found in four packs of cigarettes. So, anyone who goes through a tin of snuff every four days is ingesting the same amount of nicotine as a pack-a-day smoker. With the Great American Smoke Out approaching on Nov. 16, call the VNA at 871-7639 for a free spit quit kit.

Special Event Funding applications available

In an effort to boost year-round tourism, the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association is accepting applications for Special Event Funding. Special Event Funding, pending the determination of the city budget in December, will distribute $75,000 to a new development project in the non-ski season months of 2007.

The money will be granted to an idea for a new event that could be brought to or introduced in Steamboat Springs. A committee of representatives from the Steamboat Marketing Committee, Chamber Board and City Council will be formed to evaluate the applications.
