After losing to Battle Mountain on Thursday, many of the girls on the Steamboat volleyball team were confident they could at least wrap up third place in the Western Slope League with an easy win at Eagle Valley.
Nothing came easy for the Sailors in their Saturday match in Gypsum. Steamboat lost in three games, 23-25, 17-25, 24-26.
Sailors coach Wendy Hall said her team struggled to play together throughout the match.
In the first game, Steamboat kept things close. The game was tied at 23, but a serving error followed by a passing error gave Eagle Valley the win.
Hall said Steamboat battled in game two, rallying back from an early Eagle Valley lead. The Sailors brought the game as close as 15-17 before the Devils pulled away.
"They flat-out out-played us," Hall said. "We had too many serving and hitting errors: critical errors at critical times."
Steamboat kept the third game close, but again lost late.
The loss ends Steamboat's regular season at 6-8 in the Western Slope League. This record puts them in a three-way tie with Moffat County and Delta.
Because of Steamboat's game records and point differentials against these two schools, they secure a higher qualifying spot (fourth in league) for next week's district tournament.
Hall said the Sailors need to have a strong, focused week of practice.
League champion Battle Mountain will host the district playoffs on Saturday. Game times will be announced after today's seeding selection meeting.
