Mary Walker: Sex crimes

The media coverage of the recent events in Bailey and Lancaster County, Penn., would have us all believe that these were just more school-shooting rampages. Well, I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more.
These were not students that were sexually assaulted, tormented and murdered. They were girls and young women. And therein lies a huge difference in the nature of the behavior of the men who committed these acts. These were not just murders, they were sex crimes.
The media needs to be cognizant of these differences and report them vigorously, continuously and for more than a couple of days after the events. Parents need to demand that their schools devote particular and specific attention to the protection of girls and women in their overall security plan. Apparently, men have decided that girls and women are particularly vulnerable in a school setting.
And men need to deal with their own - particularly white men who think that life has given them a raw deal and become misogynists capable of horrific violence against girls and women.
