Luke Norland: Wall for sheriff

I was recently having a hard time making up my mind as to which sheriff candidate would get my vote this November. After reading the report of an exchange between the two well-qualified candidates, I have made my choice, and I was surprised how easy it was for me.
In an Oct. 2 story in the Steamboat Today, you retold an exchange between Gary Wall and Garrett Wiggins. Specifically, Wiggins said, "I have never worked for the defense, and I have never defended criminals."
Apparently, Wall has had some past business in the defense corner. Wiggins has none.
I was taught to play chess at the age of 12 by my father. We played every Saturday for what was probably three years. At first, he beat me every time. Then I got better, but still he could beat me using only half his brain. One Saturday, he said, "Come and sit in my chair and look around." Suddenly, I saw what was once a powerful army coming for my queen was really a tenuous position where my forces did hold some real power. When I went back to my chair, I fought with the understanding of weakness. I eventually became pretty good at chess.
Now, for my money, I want a sheriff who would arrest the bad guy and lock him up. Next, I want a sheriff wise enough to understand how that man's lawyer is going to attack in court. The man who has sat in both chairs is getting my vote. I'm voting for Gary Wall.
