Three candidates hope to draw votes from Beauprez and Ritter

Three independent candidates are hoping to draw votes from Democrat Bill Ritter and Republican Bob Beauprez in the gubernatorial race, but pollster Floyd Ciruli says they haven't exceeded a combined 4 percent in his surveys.

Paula Stephenson: 'No' on 39

Amendment 39, more commonly known as the "65 percent solution," is no solution at all. What it is, is a snappy sound bite with a feel-good title designed to draw uneducated voters into imposing a random amount of spending on "classroom expenditures."

Audrey L. Mandell: Counting on you

As you are now charged with the task of completing the Community Housing Plan portion of your project, one may assume that you are "back at the drawing board," trying to figure out how to finalize the details of the 14 affordable, on-site housing units and the five employee units of One Steamboat Place. I would like you to know that I appreciate your efforts in completing this essential component. I recognize the commitment of time, money and research this takes.

Luke Norland: Wall for sheriff

I was recently having a hard time making up my mind as to which sheriff candidate would get my vote this November. After reading the report of an exchange between the two well-qualified candidates, I have made my choice, and I was surprised how easy it was for me.

Mary Walker: Sex crimes

The media coverage of the recent events in Bailey and Lancaster County, Penn., would have us all believe that these were just more school-shooting rampages. Well, I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more.

Our View: Yes on Ref. I; no on 43

Amendment 43 on the Nov. 7 ballot would change the Colorado Constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Let us be crystal clear - this is a purely political amendment that is an unnecessary waste of the voters' time. The only thing to be gained by voting for it is to send a message of intolerance that we know the people of Colorado do not support.

Teacher pay raise up to voters

The Steamboat Springs Education Association, the local teachers union that represents many Steamboat Springs School District teachers and staff, has been relatively quiet leading up to the November election. Not anymore, said SSEA president and middle school science teacher Brad Kindred. "How would you feel if your salary was dependent on a public vote?" Kindred asked last week. Referendum 3C asks voters to absorb a tax increase of $600,000 in 2007 and an annual tax increase of $25,000 a year through 2015 to fund teacher salary increases and help attract and retain quality staff members.

Bricks and books

School building projects would be funded by Referendum 3D

Soda Creek Elementary School is 51 years old. Strawberry Park Elementary School is too small for its existing and future enrollments. Those are simply the realities, Steamboat Springs School District officials say. Whether anything happens to either building is now in the hands of the voters who live within the school district's boundaries. Referendum 3D, which will appear on the Nov. 7 ballot, is a $29.7 million bond initiative to rebuild Soda Creek and renovate and expand Strawberry Park.

Jimmy Westlake: Beyond Andromeda

Topping the alphabetical list of the 88 constellations is Andromeda, the beautiful daughter of Queen Cassiopeia and King Cepheus. This celestial royal family figured heavily in Greek mythology. The only way to stop the creature was to sacrifice Andromeda to the monster.
