Oak Creek Town Board members offered statements Thursday night that were both supportive and critical of embattled Mayor Kathy "Cargo" Rodeman. Town Board members Angie Kralj KenCairn and Steve "Spike" Beven were scheduled to address the Town Board during its meeting, and Town Board member Tom Bleuer spoke after he was added to an amended agenda. All three members read or made statements regarding what has transpired since a special meeting on Sept. 25. The purpose of that meeting was to hold a closed session to hear employee complaints about Rodeman. The Steamboat Pilot & Today has asked for tapes of that meeting, arguing the meeting was an illegal closed session because Colorado Open Meetings Law prevents discussions about elected officials to be held in secret. The town has refused to provide the tapes. For more on this story, go to steamboatpilot.com.
The inability of some non-English-speaking students to complete a state assessment test means the Steamboat Springs School District did not meet state and federal guidelines for student progress. The district fell short in one of its two Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, targets handed down from the Colorado Department of Education. The state Department of Education sets AYP guidelines and targets as required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The district and its four schools met all of their performance targets, but Steamboat Springs Middle School did not meet the participation requirement because less than 95 percent of its students took the math portion of the Colorado Student Assessment Program test.
In sports, four Steamboat Sailors are still in the hunt for titles after the first day of the Class 4A state tennis tournament in Pueblo. The Sailors advancing to today's semifinal matches are No. 1 singles player Andrew Hoing, No. 2 singles player Ramsey Bernard, and the No. 2 doubles team of Jesse Schaller and Dylan Roberts. Check in with steamboatpilot.com to see how they fare in the second day of the tournament.
Tonight, the Steamboat football team is taking on Montezuma-Cortez in Cortez, and Hayden plays Grand Valley at home. On Saturday, Soroco plays the Eagle Valley JV team.
