The Steamboat Springs City Council selected psychotherapist Karen Post as its new District 3 representative Tuesday, returning the council to its full size of seven members. Post received four votes, enough for a majority, in the first paper ballot cast by the council following interviews for five candidates Tuesday afternoon. Business owner Steve Hitchcock received the other two votes. Former councilman Kevin Kaminski vacated the seat last month, after moving outside of the district.

A candidates debate Tuesday night reached the boiling point on several occasions, with election foes sparring about qualifications and political records. The debate, hosted by the Steamboat Springs High School forensics team, drew about 60 people, who were encouraged to submit questions for the candidates before the debate began. Ten candidates running in four contested races attended the event. For more election coverage, go to steamboatpilot.com/election2006.

The number of Steamboat Springs School District students who speak a primary language other than English continues to climb, with this year's enrollment of English Language Learners, or ELL students, reaching almost 100. There are nearly 100 English Language Learners who receive student services through the district's English as a Second Language program. When Superintendent Donna Howell took over the district four years ago, there were 12 ELL students, and the district hired its first full-time ESL aide. This year, the district has four full-time ESL teachers - one at each school.

Moffat County came into Tuesday's soccer contest against Steamboat Springs with momentum, having downed Rifle on Saturday. Steamboat Springs had lost three in a row. But from the opening minute of play, it was clear to everyone at Gardner Field that Steamboat had snapped whatever problems were ailing them. The Sailors beat the Bulldogs, 4-0.
